Ben Chance, 31 lives in Battersea, London and is an Investment Manager at Vestra Private Office. He has been a trustee for One World Media for four years having secured the role with the support of Getting On Board’s Signposting Service. One World Media is a non-profit organisation which was set up over 25 years ago to support strong, vibrant and independent media that empowers citizens, promotes justice and contributes to international development.

The size of the charity has meant that Ben can be involved closely with the overall strategy and individual projects, and through volunteering for One World Media he has got to work with some very talented people.

His position with One World Media is Ben’s first as a trustee, and the role has taught him a lot. It is also fitting in well with his professional and personal life – he commits to about an hour or two a week, as well as quarterly evening board meetings, occasional events and one or two strategy days a year.

How to work on a board, networking within the media and development industries, raising funds, thinking more strategically, risk planning and how to promote a collective aim are among the skills that Ben has developed.

Ben Chance

Trustee, One World Media

“I wanted to do more to help; to go above and beyond volunteering on an ad hoc basis or raising funds through one-off activities,” says Ben of his decision to become a trustee.

“I have been able to transfer a lot of the skills I have learnt working on a board back into my work, but many are also personally applicable,” Ben explains.

“The experience gained from working with some extremely high calibre individuals across a number of industries which would ordinarily not be possible is invaluable.”
